Oh come now, empathy isn't that dangerous, and it's a perfectly legit skill to use! There are practical applications to it, it's not like I invented it or anything.

And, what else can you do when you want to communicate with a spirit who can't talk? Inquiry is all nice when it's simple questions, but empathy works better for complex ones.

Anyway, it's not like you have to do empathy with everyone. There are plenty that you can just talk to if you know how to do it right, and they are lucid enough to respond well. There are plenty that are quite fun to talk to, they will tell you all sorts of interesting things about their lives!

Of course, there are others who are a bore and just repeat the same things over and over.

I actually miss spirits being around... sometimes it feels a bit lonely without them.
